ABOUT / A STORY STILL BEING WRITTEN

Becoming
Reagan Marfo

I did not grow up knowing I would become a designer, start companies or host a podcast.

I simply kept learning, trying things and taking the opportunities in front of me.

I was not always serious about school.

When I was younger and in junior high school, I was not one of the brightest students. I also was not very serious about my studies. I was still growing and trying to understand what I was capable of.

Things started changing when I entered Pope John Senior High School. I became more focused and my results improved. When I later went to the University of Ghana, I kept taking my studies more seriously and continued performing better.

2015—2019

Pope John helped me improve. University pushed me further.

I studied Business at Pope John from 2015 to 2018. That was where I started becoming more serious about school and saw what I could achieve when I applied myself. I carried that attitude with me to the University of Ghana, where I studied Computer Science.

My family was not rich, so I knew I had to find ways to get some things for myself. In Level 100, I started looking for a skill I could learn and make money from. Coding was difficult for me. I could learn it today and forget it the next day. So I decided to try something else.

2019—2020

A friend introduced me to design.

A senior colleague told me to try graphic design. I started learning, then my friend Cupid and I created Marpid Designs. The name came from Marfo and Cupid.

We designed graphics for people on campus and charged around GHS 40. It was not a lot, but it helped me make money for myself. More importantly, it showed me that I could build something people were willing to pay for.

Later, I discovered UI/UX design, completed a course and started sharing my work online.

2020—2024

I got my first design job while I was still on campus.

In 2020, DNAR was looking for a designer. I reached out and told them I could do the work. I met the CEO at a hotel, completed a few tasks and got the job. That became my first paid product-design role.

I later worked with Montech Software Studio, Polymorph Labs and Team Mustard. Each place helped me become a better product designer.

During this time, I also mentored other designers. Some of them have gone on to work with companies such as Microsoft and MTN. I am very proud of that.

2021—NOW

Then I started building things bigger than myself.

In 2021, I helped start thedsgnjunkies. It began as a design podcast and later became a large community for designers and creatives. We hosted two major design conferences in Ghana that brought together a total of about 1,000 people.

In 2023, I started Greyend Studio with my friends. We help businesses design and build digital products.

In February 2024, I started Unscripted with Raygan under Team Raygan. I wanted to have honest conversations with entrepreneurs, creators and builders—and share the lessons behind their success.

Today, Unscripted has more than 80 episodes, 20,000 YouTube subscribers and over 1.2 million views.

WHAT CONNECTS EVERYTHING

I like creating things that help people move forward.

The next chapter is about building useful products, meaningful media and communities that make African ambition impossible to ignore.
